Dear Friends,
Another episode of All Our Brave Hearts is up! We discuss an idea related to the previous episode on worth: What if I and other spellers were not so intelligent? It is not bragging to say that many of us are incredibly smart. That is just a fact. Many of us are achieving great things and that should be celebrated. We are defying the ignorant assumptions of society and especially close-minded special education teachers. That is important to recognize.
At the same time, we need to be aware of the question: What if we weren’t so smart? Would that change how we are seen? Would that make our access to communication less compelling? Would our stories be so appreciated?
It is an important idea to consider. How to celebrate our achievements without slipping into an iteration of ableism? We share a gorgeous poem on the idea by my talented speller friend Trevor Green.
Thank you for listening and/or reading (link here)!
Your Friend,
Danny
