Dear Friends,

Well, sometimes things take longer than planned. Such is the case with the podcast. We are a few weeks behind with this episode, but finally it is up! Things got so busy in June. We recorded this on June 13! But editing and typing a transcript take time. Thank you for your patience.

The goal-setting class we mention, that I announced here last month, is going great. I am excited to adapt it to be a standalone course available anytime online. Stay tuned!

Main text, black: So I was pretty much depressed and hopeless before communication. My life prospects were pretty dim. I was a shadow of myself. Then when I gained access to communication in my daily life, it was like a flower blooming. More like a whole meadow of flowers bursting into color. It was ecstasy! Then came the question: What do I do now? It was overwhelming. From no hope to a new landscape of possibilities! And of course my disability remained. These new possibilities would only be available to me if I had adequate support.

Main text, black: Tara: We knew that if you were going to pursue these new and exciting opportunities, you were going to need support for your communication and daily life. How does the financial support for that factor in, how does people's time factor into that? So it was a calibration, and it's an ongoing calibration, of your dreams versus the practical considerations of what support we can actually provide you

Main text, black: Danny: I felt like I had to make up for all those lost years of time with no communication. I felt like I had to prove the world wrong about me. I felt lost in all of this. Being patient while building a foundation for future goals is another one. And also as ever we are constrained by the need for more support.

Main text, black: Danny: I want to say that daring to dream takes courage and a willingness to fail. It is scary! Especially if you are not used to it. I find it so daunting sometimes. It can even dysregulate me. This is one of many life lessons that people like me never got to practice before having communication. So having mindful support teams to guide and mentor us through it is so helpful. This is just one of many areas where we need to be caught up.

Main text, black: Tara: That was a really important point for me to learn alongside you, Danny. You have a remarkable mind - a truly astounding intellect - and the way you think about things is so practical, so smart, so thoughtful. But of course, if you haven't had the opportunity to be exposed to setting and planning for goals, of course you're not going to know how to do that right away. It's been a true learning experience for me to understand how to better support you emotionally as well as practically through these things that you hadn't had the chance to learn before.
